Where to find St Severus Kirche

St Severus Kirche is at Rheinallee 44, facing Boppard’s central market square. Boppard Tourism places the church in the town centre, making it easy to include while walking through the historic centre. For more context on the surrounding streets, see this guide to Boppard’s old town.

The church occupies a site with a much older history than its present architecture. Its central location also makes it a natural stop on a town-centre walk.

A brief history of the church

A brief history of the church

The church stands on the site of a Roman military bath within Boppard’s Roman fort. The bath became a place of worship in the 5th century. St. Severus later served as a collegiate church, with its chapter lasting until secularization in 1802; it is now a parish church.

The present building took shape in three stages during the 12th and 13th centuries. The towers beside the choir date from after the mid-12th century, the nave from the first quarter of the 13th century, and the choir probably from 1234. Its original diamond-shaped tower helmets gave way to the current pointed helmets in the early 17th century.

The church received the title Basilica minor in 1903, according to its official history. Its Romanesque design includes a striking vaulted nave, while the exterior’s stonework reflects the building’s successive phases.

What to look for inside and outside

What to look for inside and outside

St Severus Kirche pairs distinctive Romanesque exterior details with notable furnishings and medieval art. Outside, look for pilaster strips, round-arch friezes, keyhole windows and trefoil arches. Inside, the nave’s spider-web vault is described by the regional heritage authority as unique in Romanesque architecture.

The church’s scenic wall paintings date from the 13th century. During restoration from 1888 to 1895, they were transferred to new plaster. Other furnishings include a monumental late-Romanesque triumph cross from the mid-13th century, a Madonna and Child sculpture, the Severus tomb, a late-Gothic Marian altar and early Christian gravestones.

An early Christian baptismal font was uncovered in 1966 and is preserved in a room below the church floor. Its outlines can be seen near the main portal.
